The Hate U Give Book Club

Ms. Regitano and Ms. Feeny will be hosting a book club one Tuesday a month from February through April on Angie Thomas' book The Hate U Give for WHS students and eighth grade OHMS students. Then, on April 8, 2025, we will be going to see author Angie Thomas speak as part of the Rosamond Gifford Lecture Series at the Crouse Hinds Theater. Space is limited, so submit your permission slip as soon as possible before February 7th!

Book Club Meeting Dates

Tuesday, Feburary 11th
IA @ WHS

All participants will receive their copy of The Hate U Give. Students will learn about the story's setting and background. Snacks will be provided!

Students must submit their permission slip before attending this Kick-Off meeting.

Tuesday, March 11th
IA @ WHS

After reading the first half of The Hate U Give (through Chapter 12), the club will meet again to discuss thoughts and ideas from the book. Snacks will be provided!

Tuesday, April 8th
2:20 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. @ WHS & Crouse Hinds Theater

After students have finished reading the book, the club will meet again, this time for an extended time. Student will discuss the book, watch the 2018 film adaptation (rated PG-13) and have pizza for dinner. Then, they will attend the Angie Thomas talk at the Crouse Hinds Theater.

What do I need to do to participate in the book club?

Students should download and print the permission slip or pick one up in the WHS or OHMS library and have their parent or guardian sign it. Permission slips should be returned to their librarian by Friday, February 7, 2025.

Do I have to participate in the book club in order to attend the Angie Thomas event?

Does this book club or the field trip cost anything?

Participation and copies of The Hate U Give is completely free, thanks to a grant from the Westhill Educational Foundation.

First priority will be given to students who want to attend the book club, but any additional spots will be open to students who want to attend the Angie Thomas event.
